Healing Eyes

 Left Eye:

The skin graft, taken from his eye, was removed a couple of weeks ago and the eye is healing nicely.

The cloudy area of the eye, in the upper corner is where they took skin to cover the corneal hole while it healed after surgery.

Right Eye:

The first surgery from August 19, is healing quite well.

For the time being, Hades is still only on night time turn out since the sun can negatively impact healing and flies. Though thank heavens with the colder temperatures, and rain, there are not very many around.

Hades fell through the cracks....

Hades' Eye on July 1

* I went to check on Hades and discovered he had an ulcer on his eye.
* I contacted the barn owner who had be diligently looking after him while I was away.

* The vet was notified by the barn owner.
*The veterinarian prescribed drops and cream.
* He told her it would heal on its own (but secretly thought Hades would lose his eye).
* He told her it wasn't deep since Hades didn't appear to be in pain.
The reality is, the deeper the ulcer, the less it hurts because there are no nerve endings present.
*Nothing to worry about he said.
* The barn owner followed his instructions.
* I came to check on Hades periodically during his treatment but was busy with family obligations.
*I trusted the barn owner and vet to monitor his eye.
* Once the drops were finished, the Vet didn't follow-up. No one checked on him.

A month passed.....

Hades visited me in a dream on August 18th, urging me to come quickly. Urgent!

This is what I found....
Hades Eye on August 18

I texted this photo to an equine ophthalmologist at the Clinique Equine de Mehuedin who was so alarmed, she sent a horse transport for him the same day. He went into emergency surgery the next morning.

I am very grateful that Hades is in good hands now, and that his eyes are healing and could be saved.

The second eye became ulcerated and also had a corneal abbess due to the use of steroids given by the first vet to treat his skin condition.

Eyes are particularly sensitive to the use of cortical-steroids.
